Amy Byrnes is the Animal Justice Party (AJP) candidate for the electoral district of Hervey Bay in the 2020 State Election. She is also a student at CQUniversity, a committed and compassionate self-confessed animal lover.

Having lived in Hervey Bay for 10 years, Amy is dedicated to helping protect all of the region’s wildlife and marine life, including Fraser Island’s dingoes. She believes the dingoes of Fraser Island – known as K’gari (‘paradise’) to the local Butchulla people – deserve to be treated with more respect, along with the island in general.

“We are so lucky to have the beautiful Fraser Island so close to us and it needs to be protected.”

If elected, Amy will endeavour to work collaboratively with researchers and the traditional owners of the land to determine what is best for the island and its inhabitants. While she acknowledges and supports the need to continue tourism on Fraser and in Hervey Bay, Amy believes ecotourism is a more sustainable and viable way forward.

Amy ran in the 2019 Federal Election as the AJP’s first-ever candidate for the Division of Hinkler including Hervey Bay and Bundaberg. Amy is currently undertaking a Bachelor of Digital Media and loves to showcase nature and wildlife through a camera lens, regularly capturing photos and documentary-style films of her favourite subjects.

A passionate advocate of kindness, Amy wants nothing more than to see a world where everyone is treated equally and animals are no longer exploited or harmed at the hands of humans. She believes all animals and humans deserve to live together on this planet in peace.

“I’m so proud to be running for the AJP again because I believe, like humans, all animals have a basic right to life – free from pain and suffering – and therefore need to be represented in the government.”

As a political voice for animals, she will also fight to stop land clearing and animal experimentation, and will support renewable energy, as well as the protection of wildlife and their habitats.

“A better world starts with how we treat other living beings. Imagine the world we can create with a voice of kindness in the government – let’s make this a reality.”
